Description

Fish Name: Swan Mussel

Latin Name: Anodonta cygnea

Maximum Size: 15cm

Preferred Water Conditions: Will acclimatize to a wide range of conditions. pH: 6.5-8.0

Temperature: Cold water-temperate between 2-25 deg C (34-82 deg F)

Care: One of the largest fresh water mussels, these can grow to 25cm. Found in both rivers and lakes in the UK they are filter feeders, drawing in up to 10 litres of water a day.

Swan mussels do require a firm substrate at the bottom of the pond or aquarium as they like to part bury themselves.

Because they will find food naturally in the pond they don’t need feeding and can be left to their own devices.

Sometimes Swan mussels can be seen with a tongue like body emerging from the shell, they use this to move around or to bury themselves.
